The numbers are becoming more significant than China. With a share of 31 per cent in the US, China continues to account for the largest number of international students. However, there is a slower decadal growth rate as, in 2012-13, its share was already 29 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the last decade, the number of Indian students picking the United States for higher education annually has more than doubled. According to the Open Doors Report 2022, the country\u2019s share in the total number of international students has gone up from 11.8 per cent to 21 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The numbers are becoming more significant than China. With a share of 31 per cent in the US, China continues to account for the largest number of international students. However, there is a slower decadal growth rate as, in 2012-13, its share was already 29 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The growth rate of Indian students who travel to the United States with regard to education is likely to surpass China in 2022-23. This year, 82,000 visas were issued between June and August. This is the highest number among all countries. However, in the corresponding period in 2021-22, 62,000 student visas were issued. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, the total number of international students who pursue higher education in the US increased from 9.14 lakh to 9.48 lakh between 2020-21 and 2021-22. The increase is not just limited to Indians but also to students from other countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

US AS THE TOP DESTINATION<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

These numbers signify that the US remains the top destination for students who look for higher education options. This also shows that the country continues to offer a variety of future opportunities. Also, a large number of Indian students are registered for master\u2019s programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2021-22, Out of all international students in the US, China and India collectively accounted for 52 per cent. The Open Doors report is a survey of international exchange activity in the United States. It is implemented by the Institute of International Education and sponsored by the US Department of State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2021-2022, 1,99,182 students from India were pursuing higher education in the US. However, in 2020-2021, only 1,67,582 from India pursued higher education in the US. Thus, there is a 19 per cent increase. There were 96,654 Indian students in 2012-13 in higher education in the US. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This shows that, for two successive years, the number of Indian students enrolled in US universities had fallen by 4.4 per cent and 13.2 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DROP-IN CHINESE STUDENTS<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

There was a drop of 9 per cent in the number of students from China in the latest round. The number of Chinese students pursuing higher education in the US has declined from 3,17,299 to 2,90,086 between 2020-21 and 2021-22. It had fallen by 14.8 per cent between 2019-20 and 2020-21. However, there were 2,35,597 Chinese higher education students a decade ago in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minister Counselor for Public Diplomacy at the US embassy had stated that the Indian students recognise the value of a US education. They believe that US universities prepare them to leverage their skills and intellect to tackle the world\u2019s challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, a course-wise break-up of students was not available. But, it was seen that a majority of Indian students chose Math, Computer Science, Business, Engineering and Management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UK ADMISSIONS<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

According to the latest UK immigration statistics, it is seen that India accounts for the largest share of study visas issued by the United Kingdom. This number has overtaken the student population of China. The UK issued 4,86,868 sponsored study visas, in the year ending June 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Out of these, Indian nationals accounted for 1,17,965 This is an 89 per cent increase from the previous year. However, Chinese nationals were granted only 1,15,056 study visas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
