The number of Indian students who have enrolled in US universities has surpassed the pre-pandemic levels according to an Open Doors Survey. Chinese students have still not reached the pre-pandemic levels even though they comprise the largest international student cohort in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A large number of Indian students have chosen to pursue higher studies at several top study-abroad destinations. The United States of America is one such country. It was revealed by an Open Doors survey that Indian student numbers have surpassed the pre-pandemic levels in the academic session 2021-2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Open Doors Survey is a government-sponsored platform. There were about 1.93 lakh, Indian students, in 2019-2020 according to the report. This number declines to 1.67 lakh Indian students enrolled in US universities in 2020-2021. The number rose to 1.99 lakh in 2021-2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The largest cohort of students hails from China with 2.9 lakh students. The data has revealed that the cohort of Chinese students has not yet reached the pre-pandemic levels. This significant drop was due to the worldwide shutdown owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several locations were revealed by the Ministry of Education that have turned out to be some of the top destinations for Indian students. Such countries include the United States of America, Canada and the United Arab Emirates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student Growth Trend<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

There is a steady growth in the demand to study in the United States. The Open Doors report revealed that 1,359 students from India enrolled in universities and colleges in the US. There has been consistent growth till 1969-1979. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, following this year, the number of Indian students who chose the United States as their destination for higher studies significantly reduced. The country has been seeing a steady growth in numbers since 1984-1985. However, the number dropped again in 2020-2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was suggested by various reports that the internet boom has contributed to the number of Indian students in the United States. Less than 10 per cent of the international student cohort comprised students from India till 2000 in the country as per the reports. However, the numbers nearly doubled in 2004-2005 at 14.5 per cent when compared to 1999-2000. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indian students chose to pursue a master’s program in education in 2021-2022. Over 1.09 lakh students were enrolled in graduate programs. However, only 27.545 students enrolled in bachelor’s degrees. A significant shift has been witnessed in the disciplines and courses that students from India preferred in the US universities. 38.8 per cent of the students in 2009-2010 chose the engineering field. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, in 2021-2022, most of the students chose Mathematics and Computer Science courses. Moreover, since 2009-2010, there is a significant dip in the number of students enrolling in engineering and management studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States of America hosts some of the best study-abroad colleges <\/strong>in the world. Students who wish to enrol in them must be well aware of the procedures through which they could achieve their dreams and find success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
