The Delhi University will be implementing the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework prescribed by the National Education Policy 2020 commencing this year and as per the updates, the structure of the Undergraduate courses is four years with multiple entries and exit options along with a system of earning credits.
The Undergraduate Curriculum Framework is a student-centric framework and has been structured by keeping in mind employability, research prospects, national interests and international standards.
Delhi University is the first central university to adopt UGCF which outlines 176 credits for a four-year honours degree and 132 credits for a three-year honours degree. Students will also be provided with a wide opportunity to study subjects and courses outside their stream.
However, the pre-existing undergraduate programs – honours and program will continue with a few changes to the structure and thus, two structures have been developed with the distinction between an honours degree in a single as well as multidisciplinary degree.
For a single discipline program, students will earn an undergraduate certificate in the field of study/discipline after the successful completion of semester II and semester IV with 44 and 88 mandatory credits respectively.
Moreover, students will be awarded a Bachelor of Field of study (Honors) after the successful completion of semester VI with 132 mandatory credits and a Bachelor of Field of Study (Honors with Research/Academic Projects/Entrepreneurship Discipline) after the completion of semester VIII with 176 mandatory credits.
For a multidisciplinary program, students will earn an undergraduate certificate in the field of study/discipline after the successful completion of semester II and semester IV with 44 and 88 mandatory credits respectively.
Moreover, students will be awarded a Bachelor of Field of multidisciplinary courses of study after the successful completion of semester VI with 132 mandatory credits and a Bachelor of Field of multidisciplinary courses of study (Honors) after the completion of semester VIII with 176 mandatory credits.
Under the UGCF, all the students will have to study environmental science and sustainable development courses I and II in their first and second years and they will have to choose one of the languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution in the first two semesters.
Students will have to choose three elective courses in the two semesters of the fourth year either from a specific discipline they have chosen or others. In these two semesters, the majority of credits are from the dissertation or academic project.
The dissertation can either be based on a topic related either to a student’s Major or Minor and the structure makes a distinction between a dissertation and an academic project. Students who opt for the Former get the Bachelor of the field of study (Honors with research).
The finalization of the syllabus for the first semester for the various programs is still in process and it is still not known what will be the subjects in the course of study in the four years. The university will, however, be formulating the syllabus for the remaining semesters.
