The United Kingdom and India have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to recognize each other’s educational certifications including higher secondary, bachelor’s and master’s. This move will be resolving the long-standing issue of equivalence for one-year master’s degrees.
This will also encourage more Indians to apply to UK universities in the future. Until now, a one-year master’s degree from the UK has not been considered equivalent to the two-year master’s degree offered in India and students with a one-year master’s degree from the UK had to apply for an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities.
Moreover, students with one-year UK master’s have been out of consideration for PhDs or government jobs in India. Indian students will now have this recognized degree which will help them use their full credentials while applying for a government role.
This recognition of UK degrees is also good for undergraduate students who wish to pursue their masters in India as India will fully recognize the credits earned in the UK. However, professional degrees such as engineering, medicine, pharmacy, nursing, architecture and law have not been covered under the new MoU.
The major destination for Indian students is the United Kingdom and among non-EU countries, India is the second biggest source of students after China. Indian students represent 19 per cent of all non-EU enrolments according to the UK government data in 2020-2021.
This agreement removes barriers and builds on the UK-India partnership so that even more of the best and brightest students from India can study in the UK. The new MoU is seen as a major boost for the education sector of the UK in the post-Brexit era.
The move is expected to attract more international students, especially from India and as per the UK government communique, the benefit to the UK of welcoming non-EU students is estimated by industry to be nearly 109,000 pounds per person.
