To be eligible to receive financial assistance from the Centre, accreditation will now be mandatory for higher education institutions. The University Grants Commission had last month made the grading by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council a must for educational institutions to be eligible for recognition under Section 12B of the UGC Act, 1956.
Moreover, the already recognized institutions that are unaccredited under this section need to get the accreditation within five years so that they can retain their eligibility to get central government grants.
There were 600 unaccredited universities and 25000 unaccredited colleges across the country in May 2020 and according to the status of February 2022, there were only 15000 higher education institutions accredited by NAAC.
A Standing Committee of the Parliament on Education stated that at present, barely 20% of the 50,000 institutions go for formal accreditation and it is necessary to bring the institutions under the accreditation system to offer incentives so that a minimum benchmark of quality and standardization is maintained.
No institution will be eligible for grants provided by the central government unless the prescribed eligibility criteria by the UGC are satisfied which provides adequate facilities as per Section 12B of the UGC Act.
